WW2026 Championship Round Results
WW 2026/14 - Wearside, 31/08/26
Wearside is our Society's home course and a regular on the fixture list. We had intended to make this years visit our annual Finals Day event but unfortunately we could not agree a suitable date and time towards the end of the season so we swapped the Wearside and Houghton rounds on the fixtures calendar. As it turned out playing on the Bank Holiday Monday produced some good weather and a very healthy turn out of 19 players.
The recent rain has improved the course making the fairways softer and the greens more forgiving, it certainly helped some more than others.
Before hitting the course we revealed the plans for next season's 25th Anniversary celebrations. Though very much still in the planning stages the suggestion of a trip to the Scottish Borders produced a positive response from those who were at Wearside. More details will be released over the coming weeks and months so keep an eye out for messages.
Right now back to the golf at Wearside, as mentioned earlier thanks to the recent rain the course was a lot more forgiving than recent venues. Overall the course was in excellent condition and apart from one short sharp shower and despite the forecast the weather was perfect almost all day.
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place (on countback) with 36pts was Gordon Grant.
In second place also with 36pts came Wearside "Pro" Gary West.
And the winner with a total of 39pts (44 with win bonus) was Steve Grant.
The Longest Drive category was won by Andy Trewick. The Nearest the Pin category was won by Peter Anderson with 8.7m. No "Two's'" were carded at Wearside. Finally a total of 74 nett birdies were carded.

WW 2026/13 - Chester-le-Street, 23/08/26
Chester-le-Street is a course of two halves, the front 9 holes appear to be the original course and the back 9 over the road were added later. Our local historian and font of all knowledge Mark Wilson informed me that this was the favourite course of King George V who regularly played when "up north" visiting Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (the late Queen Mother). You see, every day is a school day.
No members of the Royal Family joined us on our visit but we did have a couple of special guest players. Paul Marshall who was playing his second game with us this season and Mark McCone who is Kevin Hanson's Father in Law, making a total of 21 players for this gathering.
We have played Chester-le-Street as a Society a couple of times before, the last time was back in 2021, it was a nice course then and is still so. There are a couple of tricky holes toward the end of the front nine, but on the whole it's a good test of your game. Thanks to the recent rain the course was a lot more forgiving than the previous few rounds but it was still a little patchy in places, on the whole the course was in very good condition and the weather was perfect for a game of golf.
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place (on countback, following a 4 way tie) with 35pts was Rico Liverani.
In second place with 37pts came Andy Dodd.
And the winner with a total of 38pts (43 with win bonus) was Les West.
The Longest Drive category was won by Kevin Hanson, who also won the Nearest the Pin category with 7.6m. No "Two's'" were carded at Chester-le-Street. Finally a healthy total of 79 nett birdies were carded.

WW 2026/12 - Tynemouth, 16/08/26
Tynemouth is another course we haven't played for a few years, our last visit was back in 2019. Tynemouth is a hidden gem of a course being set just a short distance from the coast you would expect it to be "links" in nature but it's a proper parkland course with tree lined fairways. The main feature of the course are the dips and gullies that criss-cross the course, some taken head on while others were angled making accuracy a premium. Once again the course was very dry and patchy in places due to the lack of rain this summer. As we gathered in the clubhouse there was a squally shower but thankfully it had passed before we went out. Some tee boxes were a bit rough but on the whole the course was in very good condition.
Web had a slightly lower than average turn out of 16 players due to holidays and a couple of drop outs on the day, the general consensus of those who did play was very favourable and the scoring certainly appears to back that up with six of the sixteen players carding above 36 points.
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place on countback with 41pts was Andy Trewick.
In second place with also with 41pts came Peter Carter.
And the winner with an excellent total of 44pts (49 with win bonus) was Steve Grant, the highest round score so far this season.
The Longest Drive category was won by Peter Carter, who also won the Nearest the Pin category with 11.55m. Two "Two's'" were carded at Tynemouth, one each by Andy Dodd & Dave Watts. Finally a healthy total of 87 nett birdies were carded.
As a side note some comments have been made about the playing handicaps and how they are calculated, I will send out an email with an explanation later.

WW 2026/11 - Southmoor, 09/08/26
This is our first Society visit to Southmoor since 2009 and it hasn't changed a bit! it's still a tough test of anyone's game, with it's hilly setting and gorse & heather lined fairways that make shot accuracy a premium. Starting off with an innocuous par 3 you are lulled into a false sense of security then it quickly gets into it's stride. with a tough par 5. Once again the course was very dry and patchy in places due to the lack of rain, though the overnight showers did help soften the ground and greens a little. As at Middlesbrough some tee boxes left a lot to be desired but on the whole the course was in very good condition.
As the very good turnout of 20 players (including one guest, more on that later) in the clubhouse it was raining quite heavily making a lot of noise on the conservatory roof but thankfully it had stopped before we went out to start the round and only a couple of brief showers appeared but not enough to spoil the day.
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place on countback with 33pts came our guest "Portuguese Tour" player and Society President Paul Marshall, making his usual fleeting visit in between Tour events.
In second place with also with 33pts came Mark Wilson.
And the winner with 36pts (41 with win bonus) was Jim Rooks who has certainly recovered from his back injury at Middlesbrough.
The Longest Drive category was won by Michael Brace. The Nearest the Pin category was won by Ian Gunn with 3.11m, admittedly the ball hardly got higher than 3m off the ground! A proper "Sally Gunnell". Two "Two's'" were carded at Southmoor, one each by Ian Gunn & Andy Trewick. Finally a total of 58 nett birdies were carded

WW 2026/10 - Middlesbrough, 26/07/26
This is our first Society visit to this parkland course situated on the outskirts of Middlesbrough centre. Being a Municipal course it doesn't get the funding that most private courses do but it was still a nice course with some tricky holes teeing off over gullies. There was a bit of confusion when we tried to pay the green fees as the club wanted payment only by card, but we managed to sort out the issue. Also the catering that was available left a lot to be desired as there was only pre packed sandwiches available.
Once again the course was very dry and patchy in places due to the lack of rain. Some tee boxes left a lot to be desired but at least the greens were in very good condition and reasonably fast. The weather for our visit variedfrom warm and sunny interspersed with a few sharp squally showers but on the whole the conditions were almost perfect for a game of golf.
Unfortunately Jim Rooks had to withdraw after 11 holes with a bad back. Get well soon Jim & hope to see you at Southmoor in a couple of weeks.
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place on countback with 33pts was Steve Grant.
In second place with also with 33pts came Rico Liverani.
And the winner with 34pts (39 with win bonus) was Dave Coates.
The Longest Drive category was won by Jim Rooks. Dave Coates won the Nearest the Pin category with 1.78m. Two "Two's'" were carded at Ryton, one each by Peter Carter & Gordon Grant. Finally a total of 52 nett birdies were carded.

WW 2026/9 - Ryton, 12/07/26
Ryton is a parkland course set on a narrow strip of land bordered by the main East-West railway line on one side and the River Tyne on the other. It's a pleasant course and we always get a friendly welcome here. The course layout does have a couple of drawbacks with a few criss-cross holes that can cause some hold ups in play.
As has become the norm this season the course was very dry and patchy in places though on the whole the greens were in very good condition and reasonably fast. Thankfully the high temperatures we had during the week leading up to our visit had reduced to more reasonable conditions for a game of golf.
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place on countback with 33pts was Mark Wilson.
In second place with also with 33pts came Les West.
And the winner with 35pts (40 with win bonus) was Mickey Bell.
The Longest Drive category was won by Eddie Harrison. Peter Carter won the Nearest the Pin category with 4.95m. Two "Two's'" were carded at Ryton. Finally 55 nett birdies were carded.

WW 2026/8 - Garesfield, 28/06/26
After a couple of seasons away we returned to this scenic parkland course with beautiful views across the Tyne valley. As we gathered in the clubhouse the main topic of conversation was the fact that a Firemen's Pension must be very poor as Eddie was on the scrounge for a pair of socks, but more about that later.
Thankfully the high temperatures and thunderstorms that some had during the week leading up to our visit had blown over leaving a pleasant, dry and warm day. A stiff breeze made driving tough on some holes but easier on others.
In the past we have seen the course in better condition, the recent dry and sunny weather has dried out the fairways and the greens were a little patchy in places. The main problem was the amount of daisy's growing on the fairway edges making it difficult to find your ball at times, even on the fairways!
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place with 32pts came Andy Dodd.
In second place with 33pts came John Ford.
And the winner with 35pts (40 with win bonus) was "Sockless" Eddie Harrison, perhaps he should play barefoot more often!
The Longest Drive category was won by Eddie Harrison. Michael Brace won the Nearest the Pin category with 3.9m. No "Two's'" were carded at Garesfield. Finally only 45 nett birdies were carded

WW 2026/7 - Cookridge Hall, 14/06/26
Cookridge Hall was a new course to the Society, though Mark, Dave and Mickey had played part of the course before but were rained off at about half way so they did not gain much of an advantage.
Thankfully the high winds that had rather blighted our visit to Richmond the previous day had abated and overall the weather was excellent with lots of warm sunshine, calm winds and above all - NO RAIN!
The course itself was excellent and in great condition with a very nice layout that meant you had to think about your next shot and not just take your driver. From what I can tell from the clubhouse conversations following the match everyone really enjoyed the course and facilities, including the hearty post match meal.
Right now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place with 34pts came Eddie Harrison.
In second place with 41pts came Andy Trewick.
And the winner with 42pts (47 with win bonus) was my Chauffeur for the weekend, John Ford.
The Longest Drive category was won by Gary West. Eddie Harrison won the Nearest the Pin category with a very creditable 1.6m. One "Two'"was carded by Ian Lawson. Finally 60 nett birdies were carded at Cookridge Hall.

WW 2026/6 - Richmond, 13/06/26
For this seasons Borders Championship we ventured south again, staying in Harrogate & playing Richmond and Cookridge Hall. I will cover the Borders in a separate report later, click HERE to see the full results.
This was our second visit to this scenic parkland course perched on the hillside above the town, the first was way back in September 2012. After looking at the report for that game our latest visit could almost be a carbon copy weather wise with high winds causing us all problems. The winner on that occasion was a long lost friend Tim Aberdeen who carded 28 points in the windy conditions, at that time the Society'slowest winning points total. The course itself was in very good condition and almost all the comments were favourable, apart from the high winds, sorry but I have no control over the weather!
Now for the top three following card scrutiny -
In third place (after countback) with 31pts came Jim Rooks.
In second place with 32pts came Bryan Mountford.
And the winner with 33pts (38 with win bonus) was Ian Lawson.
The Longest Drive category was won by Andy Dodd. Jim Rooks won the Nearest the Pin category with 8.00m. Four "Two's"were carded, one each by Paul, Kevin, Eddie & Bryan. 61 nett birdies were carded at Richmond

WW 2026/5 - Tyneside, 31/05/26
Tyneside is a regular fixture on the Wanderers annual tour of North East Golf Courses for a few good reasons. It's relatively local for everyone, usually in great condition and we always get a warm welcome and this year was no different. Unlike our previous gathering at Billingham we had a good turnout of 17 players enjoying the late spring sunshine making it a great day for golfing.
Once out on the course the conditions were perfect and the course was beautiful though the rough was quite dense in places meaning there were quite a few lost balls as we went round. Lets hope everyone restocks before our next gathering, our annual Weekend Away trip to play for the Borders Championship trophy.
Tyneside was also round one of this season's Three Rivers Challenge. We have slightly altered the format, this season will comprise of the rounds at Tyneside, Middlesbrough and Chester-Le-Street Click HERE for more details.
Now for the results, following post match card scrutiny here are the top three -
In third place (after countback) with 31pts came Alan Welsh.
In second place with 34pts came Steve Grant.
And the winner with 35pts (40 with win bonus) was Gordon Grant.
The Longest Drive category was won by Alan Welsh. Michael Brace won the Nearest the Pin category with 6.10m, his second category win in succession. Once again no "Two's"were carded though sixty six nett birdies were carded. .
Congratulations to the above, As mentioned earlier our next gathering is our Weekend Away trip to North Yorkshire on Saturday & Sunday 13-14/6/26. Full information will be released later this week & looking forward to seeing you there.

WW 2026/4 - Billingham, 24/05/26
This is only our second visit to this scenic parkland course, the first was way back in 2008, though I suspect it won't be 18 years before we visit again. Unfortunately this visit coincided with the final game of the Premier League football season meaning the numbers were way down, myself included.
Mark has provided me with some details of the match. Apparently the course was in very good condition though the rough was a bit on the long side and there were some blind drives meaning the course would be played differently on any later visits. On the whole the ten players who attended all seemed to have positive comments.
The weather conditions for our visit were nothing short of brilliant, warm & dry with just a light breeze making the temperature a little more comfortable.
Anyway following post match card scrutiny here are the top three -
In third place with 29pts came Jim Rooks.
In second place with 30pts came Gordon Grant.
And the winner with 36pts (41 with win bonus) was Paul Baker.
The Longest Drive category was won by Paul Baker. Michael Brace won the Nearest the Pin category with 3.86m. No "Two's"were carded at Billingham, and twenty nett birdies were carded. .
Congratulations to the above, hopefully we will have a better turnout at our next match at Tyneside Golf Club, a long time Society favourite next Sunday 31/5/26.

WW 2026/3 - Consett, 10/05/26
This was our first Society visit to this parkland course and I suspect it won't be our last. The course itself is perched on top of a hillside giving some spectacular views but also made for some challenging holes especially towards the end of the round with quite a climb back to the clubhouse. All I can say is thank god for buggies!
Given the amount of rain on the Friday and Saturday before our visit the course was in very good overall condition. The only comments were about the greens being patchy in places. That may be due to not being mowed for a few days due to the recent rain.
Thankfully the weather conditions for our visit were favourable, dry with just a light, if chilly breeze taking the edge off the temperature until the sun broke through raising the temperature a little. Our largest turnout of the season so far , a very respectable 22 members braved the cool conditions, including the Local Hero Dave Watts, who only lives 5 minutes away from the course.
Overall everyone appeared to enjoy the course and especially pre match bacon butty given the green fee including food was only £22.50, we have paid a lot more for some other courses not as good as Consett.
Anyway following post match card scrutiny here are the top three -
In third place on countback with 37pts came Andy Trewick.
In 2nd place, also with 37pts came local boy Dave Watts.
And the winner with 38pts (43 with win bonus), taking his first round win at only his third outing with the Wanderers was Michael Brace.
The Nearest the Pin category was won by Paul Baker. Dave "Bubba" Watts won the Longest Drive category and after three rounds we finally have a "Two" on the board, thanks to Eddie Harrison.
Congratulations to the above, hopefully we will have a warmer day at our next match at Billingham Golf Club on Sunday 24/5/26.

WW 2026/2 - Hobson, 26/04/26
We have played Hobson on numerous occasions over the years but for this visit the course was probably in the best condition we have ever seen. The greens were very fast due to the very dry spring we have had. This also meant the fairways were rock hard in places.
Last year out visit was curtailed for most of us by a very heavy rain downpour but thankfully the conditions this time were relatively benign with just a light, if chilly breeze taking the edge off the temperature until the sun broke through. A good turnout of 16 members braved the cool conditions and appeared to enjoy the course and pre match bacon butty.
Following post match card scrutiny here are the top three -
In third place with 35pts came Steve Grant.
In 2nd place with 36pts came John Ford.
And the winner with 37pts (42 with win bonus), taking his first round win at only his second outing with the Wanderers was Peter Carter.
The Nearest the Pin category was won by Alan Welsh and Peter Carter also won the Longest Drive category on the day with an awesome 280+ yard drive, it looks like we may have another future "Pro" in our midst!
Congratulations to the above, hopefully we will have a warmer day at our next match at Consett Golf Club on Sunday 26/4/26.

WW2026/1 - Newbiggin 12/4/26
After what felt like a long and at times very wet winter we finally arrived at the start of a new Wanderers season, our 24th as a Society. Unfortunately the numbers were down for our first match of the year mainly due to the rearrangement of the SAFC fixture against Spurs. That match was due to be played the day before but Sky TV in their infinite wisdom moved it back a day to suit their coverage.
Even with this, we had a good turn out of fourteen members who took to Newbiggin Links. Unfortunately I was one of the members that missed the golf so this report is second hand. From what I was told the course was in good condition and the weather was fair and dry but very windy which appears to be mirrored by the lower than usual scores.
Following post match card scrutiny here are the top three -
In third place on countback with 35pts came Steve Grant.
In 2nd place on countback also with 35pts came Andy Trewick.
And the winner with 36pts (41 with win bonus), taking his first ever round win was Bernie Fitzsimmon.
Congratulations to the above and thanks everyone who braved the elements at Newbiggin including two of our new members Michael Brace & Kevin Hanson. Hopefully we will have a higher turnout at our next match at Hobson Golf Club on Sunday 26/4/26.
