WW2018 Season match reports
WW2018 - Season Report
For the 2018 season the Wanderers had 30 full members, some played more games than others though we did average 17 members playing per round. As usual we gained a few and lost a few over the winter including two past Champions. We added five new members to our band of happy hackers - Joe Bell, Doug Imeson, Scott Paxton, Steve Rudd and Brian Slack, most of whom seem to have settled in very well and appear to have enjoyed the season's events. As usual it wouldn't have been a Wanderers season if the weather hadn't played a part through the year. We had planned to play our usual pre season warm up game at Hobson Golf Club in March but thanks to the “Beast From The East” (remember that?) we had to cancel. This was mainly due to the course being buried under two foot of snow, though some of our hardier members still wanted to play! We even had to postpone the first match of the season to the following week due to the (usually bone dry) links course at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea being flooded. Thankfully the rest of the season was relatively trouble free weather-wise thanks to one of the best summers in living memory.
After sixteen seasons as a Society it is becoming increasingly difficult to find new venues in the local area to sample, that said we still managed to add three new courses to our list (Dalmahoy East & West plus Morpeth). So to make up for the lack of new courses we decided to revisit a couple of venues unused by the society for a good few years. On the whole the comments were positive regarding our choice of courses for this season. With regards to the running of the Society, following suggestions and comments that our “Course Scratch Score” handicap adjustment system was unfair to lower handicappers we took the comments on board and decided to scrap that method. Its replacement is loosely based on the official R&A handicap system with adjustment bands based on the individual players starting handicap. Our new system appears to be working OK though there are still a few issues to sort out over the winter before the 2019 season.
Right, now for the main reason we were all there for, the golf. For the first of this seasons Society Majors, the Borders Championship, this year we decided to head north to the outskirts of Edinburgh and play at Dalmahoy Golf Club, stopping at the hotel on site. There are two separate 18 hole courses. The West course can be best described as short but technical, making accuracy a premium and the East course is best described as a bit of a beast with long but relatively wide fairways bordered by rough that can only be described as jungle like! In our infinite wisdom we decided to play the “easy” West course on the first day which lulled us all into a false sense of security. The East course is a totally different kettle of fish which was reflected in the scores. The winner on the first day was Dave Watts with 45 points whereas the winner the following day was Paul Baker with 34, a whopping 11 points less! The winner and 2018 Borders Champion taking the honour of being the guardian of The Claw for this year with a total of 69 points (45+24) was Dave Watts, his first Society "Major" win in eight years as a Member.
Another of our Society's annual events is our Team Challenge day, this year we had intended to play this competition at Wearside Golf Club on August Bank Holiday Monday but due the a number of factors there wasn't a big enough entry for that day. We tried swapping dates around, hoping to increase the entry list but this didn't help either. Eventually we did manage to hold the event at Blyth, though we had to reduce it to an 18 hole singles event. As this is our Society's homage to the Ryder Cup, and the game was played at the start of Ryder Cup week, for this year only we made this a USA versus Europe match. Following an enjoyable afternoon's golf the result mirrored the actual competition played on the outskirts of Paris the following weekend with Team Europe thoroughly wuppin' Team USA's ass by 6 points to 3.
Now for the season long competitions.
Firstly the Longest Drive category, last season this category was dominated by one player but this year there was more competition with two players winning 3 rounds each in second place but the winner with four round wins was Andy Trewick. The Nearest the Pin competition was a much closer run thing with NINE players going into the final round with a chance of winning. Thankfully (for me at least) this was all resolved at Wearside when Andy Dodd won the final round making him the category Champion for 2018.
As for the Two's Pot competition, last season we had 23 two's but this year all we could muster was a paltry 16! All the better for the players who did manage a two as the share value went up from £5.50 to £8.00 this year. After a three way tie last year we also had an outright winner, Andy Dodd who carded 4 two's this year. For 2018 we decided to reintroduce a competition we ran for one year way back in 2008, the Birdie Bowl. As you would expect we had a lot more Birdies than Twos, 88 in total. Ironically, given the ten year gap, we had the same winner in 2018, Jim Rooks won the bowl with 13 birdies.
For the 2018 season we changed the format for our second Major, the Aberdeen Shield. In the past years we have run it and its predecessor the Chairman's Cup as a pure knockout competition like the FA Cup. In an attempt to reduce the number of games we have changed to a Champions League style format with a league phase followed by a knockout phase. This year's Final was a rerun of the battle for the main Championship with Gordon Grant taking on Craig English at Sharpley Springs Golf Club in early October. The well matched pair fought out a ding-dong battle which went all the way to the 18 th hole, requiring a playoff hole to decide the winner. In the end Craig English came out the winner and new Tim Aberdeen Memorial Shield Champion.
Now for the big one, the Main Championship and the race for the Claret Jug. In recent years there have been as many as seven players going into Finals day with a chance of winning but this season one player went into the match with an eight point lead. Once again it was a battle between Gordon and Craig, with Gordon holding the upper hand going into the final round and indeed going into the back nine holes. But then Craig began the fight back and by the end of the round he had overtook Gordon eventually winning by two points with a total of 361 to join his Aberdeen Shield win. Runner up Gordon finished just behind with 359 points. In third place (after a “rounds played” countback) was Jim Rooks on 350 points with outgoing Champion Bryan Mountford in fourth.
Right, that's it for another year, on behalf of the whole Society I would like to congratulate our new double Champion Craig and all our other category winners. I would also take this opportunity to thank our Corporate Sponsors Fred Stoddart Ltd and DESCO for their support throughout the season, without their financial assistance we would not have been able to deliver the programme we did at the same cost to you all. For further information on all our Corporate Sponsors click HERE.
Finally, a very big thank you to all our members and guest players who have supported the Society this year and let's hope for more of the same when we meet up again in early 2019 to start all over again.

Aberdeen Shield report provided by 2018 Champion Craig English
Quarter Final v Mark Wilson Brancepeth Castle GC
It was a red hot day and after playing fairly steady I got myself to dormie 3 after 15. Mark then decided to start playing and knocked in 2 monster putts from off the green at 16 and 17 and hit his approach to 2 feet on the 18 th to take it to a play-off. I was like Roy Scheider in Jaws, every time I thought I'd finished him off he came back from the dead! We were both fairly knackered after playing in the heat but our natural fitness took us back down the 1st for the play-off and I managed to sneak a win there.
Semi Final v Jim Rooks Blyth GC
To be fair Jim played really well in this match but was giving me 20 shots and that was just too many on the day. I made a couple of good putts at the right time and ended up winning 4 and 3 which was definitely a bit flattering.
Final v Gordon Grant Sharpley GC
The final was a fairly tight game but I went 2 down after 14. I came back to win the next 3 to go 1 up down 18. Gordon went for the green over the water but went in the drink, however I found the bunker and had a few hacks before we got the calculators out and decided that Gordon had won the hole with an 8! We went back to the 1 st for a play-off and again I was lucky enough to pinch a win there.
All in all I had 3 great games which could have went either way to be honest, a bit fortunate but honoured to win the shield. A really nice touch by all the society members to have a whip round and pay for me to have an all expenses trip to a do at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, I look forward to heading off there shortly and I'll see you all for the Christmas do.
Kind regards,
Craig English

WW18/16 - DESCO Wearside Finals Day, Sunday 21/10/18
For the final time this season we gathered in the Wearside Golf Clubhouse ready to devour a tasty bacon sandwich washed down by a nice hot cuppa before heading out onto the course. We had a good turnout of 22 members for this our last round of the sixteen match season and the course was in far better condition than our previous visit in September. The only problem was the scourge of all golf courses in the autumn, LEAVES! You only had to stray slightly off the fairway and your ball would disappear as if by magic. This trick wasn't limited to the rough, one of our group almost lost their ball in the middle of the 18th fairway, though there are mitigating circumstances as we aren't used to looking for balls on the fairway!
On the whole the weather played ball for our final gathering though it was a bit breezy but mild for most of the game. Indeed it was positively balmy at one point when the sun came out and Paul Marshall threatened to take some clothes off, at this point the sun disappeared so thankfully he kept them on. The afternoon was only spoiled by a squally shower but even that didn't put too much of a dampener on the game.

WW18/15 - City of Newcastle, Sunday 7/10/18
For the penultimate round of the 2018 season we returned to what has quickly become a highlight on the Wanderers calendar. City of Newcastle Golf Club is a hidden gem set less than 5 miles outside the city centre and home to a beautiful course along with a few resident "little old deer's". Thankfully unlike at Blyth the final group didn't have to let them through this time!
For this round the Wanderers filled our allocation of 20 players and as we gathered in the clubhouse the weather appeared to take a turn for the worse with dark clouds hovering over. Thankfully the rain held off for the most part mainly due to the strong breeze blowing the cobwebs away.

WW18/14 & Team Challenge - Blyth, Sunday 23/9/18
Finally, at the third attempt we managed to hold our annual Team Challenge day, all be it only over 18 holes. As this is Ryder Cup week I decided to add a little twist to this years event by making it a Europe vs USA competition, for the full report click HERE.
Our Society have visited Blyth an a couple of occasions and it has always been in good condition, usually leading to quite a high scoring round and this year was no exception. Apart from two greens that had been hollow tined and top dressed the course was very good. Even the late September weather was reasonable with only the odd shower spoiling the day. We even had a good turn out of 18 members and one guest player taking to the course.
Before the game some members were asking if the "Double" had been done before i.e. winning the Championship and the Aberdeen Shield (or Presidents Cup). I have checked the records and since 2005 two players have won both competitions, Jim Rooks in 2009 and Paul Baker in 2011. A further two players have won the other double (the Main and and Borders Championships) Ian Gunn in 2012 and Andy Trewick in 2016. We have yet to witness the Treble, maybe next year?
A Society record was broken at Blyth, the winner John Ford now goes down as having the largest single handicap cut in Wanderers history. Thanks mainly to the idiosyncrasies of our latest handicap adjustment system he has "earned" an 8.5 stroke reduction for the next round. Never mind John as a consolation I am sure Pam is really looking forward to polishing your round winners trophy!

WW2018 - Team Challenge Day, Blyth, Sunday 23/9/18
As most of you know the Wearside Wanderers Team Challenge event is our homage to the Ryder Cup usually with a pairs match on the morning followed by a singles game on the afternoon. Originally we planned to play it at Wearside on August Bank Holiday Monday but due to low numbers we moved it back a couple of weeks. Once again we were scuppered by a low turn out, finally at the third attempt we managed to run the event, all be it on a reduced basis.
For this year, as this is Ryder Cup week I decided to name the two teams Europe & USA. The two Team Leaders (our Chairman Paul Marshall and reining Champion Bryan Mountford) drew the teams.
Paul took charge of Team Europe, comprising of - Andy Dodd, Dave Sanders, John Ford, Derek Griffiths, Brian Slack, Mark Wilson, Dave Coates & Ian Gunn
Bryan took charge of Team USA, comprising of - Jim Rooks, Joe Bell, Dave Watts, Alan Welch, Andy Trewick, Gordon Grant, Craig English & Bernie Fitzsimmon.
The weather could have been better, but it also could have been a lot worse as the forecast was for heavy rain & high winds. as it was it was sunny, reasonably calm and mostly dry so we certainly dodged the bullet.
In past years we have played a 9 hole "pairs" competition on the morning, followed by an 18 hole "singles" matches on the afternoon but for this year we had to drop the morning session so the two teams took to the course to do battle. Once the matches were completed we gathered in the clubhouse to await the results as they came in. The results had swung either way with the overall result in the balance until the middle order took control for Team Europe. The honour of winning the Team Challenge cup for Team Europe went to Andy Dodd when he won his match making it 5 points to 2 in favour of Europe with only 2 points left to play for. In the end the competition finished 6 to 3 meaning the winner was Team Europe led by Paul Marshall. Congratulations to them and commiserations go to Team USA, let's hope the main event next weekend goes Europe's way as well.

WW18/13 - Wearside 1, Sunday 9/9/18
This gathering was to have been our annual and usually very popular Team Challenge day but due to a combination of factors the number of entrants was too low to run this competition effectively. Depending upon numbers at one of the next two rounds (Blyth or Newcastle) we may play the competition there. Anyway, back to the Wearside game, usually the course is in very good condition but thanks partially to the hot summer the usual hollow tining on the greens had been delayed by a few weeks. This meant the greens were not up to the usual standard making putting a bit of a lottery.
Our slightly lower than usual turnout of 13 members were bolstered by two guest players, one new to the Society (Kevin Martin) and one an old friend (Paul Rawlinson) who both appeared to enjoy their day with us. Once out on the course it quickly became obvious the strong breeze would be a major factor, assisting on some holes but causing problems on others. That along with the poor condition of the greens made for a generally low scoring round, though it didn't stop Derek taking the win on the day with a very respectable 40 points.

WW18/12 - Wilton, Monday 27/8/18
This is our third visit to Wilton, set at the base of the Eston Hills, the beginning of the North York Moors. When sitting in the clubhouse you could be excused for thinking you were miles away from any industry or major towns, that all changes once you reach the second hole. 150 years ago the view north would have been spectacular but that was before the industrialisation of the Tees Estuary.
Historically we have had a good turnout for this venue but due to a number factors (School & Bank holidays & work commitments included) we only had 10 members and 1 guest playing. As our small but perfectly formed band of golfing warriors gathered in the club house before the game we were talking to some club members who let us know the greens were in poor condition, they were correct! The greens, along with the tee boxes were in very poor condition which rather took the edge off our visit and maybe explained to some extent the poor scoring on the day.

WW18/11 - Morpeth, Sunday 12/8/18
Well, after three semi tropical matches (Washington, Wynyard & Brancepeth) normal Wearside Wanderers weather returned, with heavy overnight rain causing a few headaches. Even as late as 90 minutes before our tee time the game was in doubt but thankfully the rain eased and the course was declared open and playable. As it turned out we enjoyed the best of the day's weather, even the sun poked through a couple of times.
This is our first visit to this pleasant parkland course so we didn't know what to expect, on the whole I think most players enjoyed our visit (though maybe not Paul Baker, who had "one of those days", the kind we all have every so oftern). We also had a guest player in the shape of Gary West's Dad, who's influence certainly helped Gary's performance on the day, just see the results below!

WW18/10 - Brancepeth Castle, Sunday 22/7/18
Who would have thought way back in March when our first two gatherings were postponed due to snow and flooding that the main talking point would be the current hot & dry weather conditions! All the courses we have played recently have shown signs of the lack of significant rain and Brancepeth was no different. The fairways were parched but at least the greens had been watered and were in excellent condition.
Brancepeth is a beautiful and very highly rated course with some spectacular holes and as such is a test of anyone's game at any time, never mind playing it in almost 30 degree heat and high humidity. All I can say is some members coped with the conditions better than others with scores ranging from 35 right down to 12 points.

WW18/9 - Wynyard Hall, Sunday 8/7/18
As we gathered in the clubhouse before the game the conversation was dominated by the recent quarter final victory.... no not Gordon's Aberdeen Shield win above but England's World Cup victory the previous day. Looking around there were a few members nursing a hangover after celebrating the win and let's hope for more next celebrations next weekend.
Anyway, that's enough about the overpaid prima-donna's, let's get back to the important stuff, the golf. Wynyard is an odd course, it always reminds me of an old and sadly missed favourite, Mount Oswald. Comprising of an interesting front nine holes followed by a mediocre back nine. In the past Wynyard has provided us with a few memorable moments especially when a former member Tony Arkley decided he didn't need his 3 wood any more and launched it into the middle of the lake on the 16th. As at Washington the previous game Wynyard can suffer from being prone to flooding but once again the weather has been kind giving us a beautiful course in excellent condition. Our group was following on directly behind the Club Championship games and the course was prepared to suit with some very tough pin positions on fantastic greens, all in all a great day was had by all to cap off a great weekend for sport.

WW18/8 - Washington, Sunday 24/6/18
The lead up to this game was dominated by the England World Cup match, some Society members wanted to watch the game and others didn't. In the end we compromised by teeing off a little later than originally intended. While some decided to watch the match at home, others gathered in the clubhouse to watch England demolish Panama which provided a good start to the afternoon.
Washington is one of those courses that can suffer from flooding and needs dry weather in the week (or weeks) leading up to the game, thankfully that's what we got this visit. The course was in very good condition, the best I have seen in 20 plus years of playing here, with lush fairways combined with very good greens. Even the weather played ball with glorious unbroken sunshine and just a slight breeze to cool things down a little.

WW18/7 - Tynemouth, Sunday 10/6/18
After checking the history books I found the Wanderers last visited Tynemouth way back in July 2006. On that occasion I won the match with 42 points so I was looking forward to our visit with an eye to repeating that feat. Sadly for me it wasn't to be but there were some excellent scores carded on this visit including a first round win for one of our newer members.
The course was in very good condition with lush fairways combined with very nice greens. Even the weather played ball, though it did look at one point we were in for a downpour but thankfully the cloud blew over leaving us with a very pleasant afternoon.
On returning to the club house we were in for another pleasant surprise. As well as the Wanderers the club had been hosting a christening party and the organiser brought through plates of sandwiches, pies, cake and fruit which the massed ranks of the Wanderers consumed like a hoard of hungry locust's! A very kind and welcome gesture indeed.

2018 Borders Championship, Sun & Mon 27-28/5/18
For this season we decided to venture "abroad" and took the high road to our base for the trip, Dalmahoy Golf Club and Hotel to the south west of Edinburgh City Centre. Dalmahoy hosts two courses, each with its own distinct identity, the Championship standard East course and it's little brother the West course. On the drive up all was well weather wise with glorious sunshine and temperatures in the mid 20's right up till we crossed the Lammermuir Hills and dropped down towards Edinburgh. Once over the top we descended into mist and low cloud and the temperature dropped to 12-15 degrees! At least it stayed dry and once the sun got out later in the day it turned into a very pleasant afternoon.
Dalmahoy West
As we gathered in the club house bar, some of us took in sustenance and others (myself included) carried out the pre match preparations ready for the first round of the 2018 Borders Championship. The West course may not be the longest we will play so we decided to go against Wanderers tradition and play off the white tees adding about 120 yards to the course. Once under way it soon became obvious that there would be some high scores carded on the West course and so it turned out to be. When we had all completed the matches and the cards were checked the Championship leader after the first round was Dave Watts with an excellent tally of 45 points.
Following the golf and the usual post match announcements we retired to our rooms to prepare for the evening's "feast" and a few drinks, then a few more ect! The a-la carte menu, though very nice did leave a bit to be desired in the quantity stakes, especially when some of us are growing lads and need feeding up (no names, no pack drill you all know who I am talking about).
Dalmahoy East
Sunday morning dawned foggy and overcast and that wasn't just the weather, mostly due to some self inflicted wounds the previous evening. To make up for the portion sizes of the previous evening's meal, a large and wholesome full Scottish breakfast including the obligatory portion of haggis was consumed and this sorted everyone out for the day ahead.
The breakfast was much needed as we were to take on the full Dalmahoy Championship course, a tough test of anyone's game. Having played the course before I knew there wouldn't be any repeat of the 40+ points scores carded the previous day but, mainly thanks to some brutal rough the scoring was lower than I expected. Luckily as we waited for out tee slot the morning mist and cloud burnt off turning into a beautiful warm & sunny day. With regards to the course I, along with others were disappointed with the condition of the greens some of which were very patchy in places, not what you would expect for a Championship standard course.
When the golf was over we gathered, sitting in the glorious sunshine on the terrace outside the castle to replenish the fluids before the journey back over the border to civilisation! Judging by the favourable comments on the whole the majority appeared to have enjoyed the venue and the trip.
Borders Championship
With only two rounds counting the Borders Championship event is usually a very tight run thing, occasionally though we have a runaway winner as happened this year winning with a 4 point margin-
In fouth place with 64 points (32+32) was Jim Rooks.
In third place, also with 64 points but the higher single round score (33+31) was Mark Wilson.
In second place with 65 points (36+29) Came Alan Welch.
And the winner and 2018 Borders Champion taking the honour of being the guardian of The Claw for this year with a total of 69 points (45+24) was Dave Watts, his first Society "Major" win in eight years as a Member.

WW18/5 & WA1 - Dalmahoy West, Sunday 27/5/18
For this seasons Weekend Away trip we visited the beautiful Dalmahoy estate to the south west of Edinburgh. Click HERE for the full report on that event.
The West course is the little brother of the main Championship East course that we tackled the following day. What it lacks in length it more than makes up for in some tricky and interesting holes. To extend the course, adding about 120 yards, we decided to use the white tees instead of the usual yellow's.

Following the previous evenings celebrations, a good night's rest and a hearty breakfast we were ready to tackle the Championship East course, a tough test of anyone's game!
The rough was brutal and the greens weren't the best meaning there would be no repeat of the 40+ points totals carded the previous day. At least the weather played ball once the early morning mist and low cloud burned off.

WW18/4 - Gosforth, Sunday 6/4/18
Phew what a scorcher! that's the best way to describe our day at Gosforth. We have played here once before back in 2013 and I remembered it as a pleasant parkland course, not the longest but quite tight with tree lined fairways to catch the odd wayward shot. Much to the annoyance of my playing partners it appeared that most of my "off line" shots hit trees and bounced back into the fairway, some you win & some you lose!
Given the date change and the fact it was a Bank Holiday weekend we had a very healthy turn out with 18 Society members and a guest playing. Sadly the course was not in the best condition, even given the beautiful weather. The fairways badly needed cutting as the grass was more like the first cut of rough at most other courses meaning very little and inconsistent run. The greens were bobbly and very difficult to get the pace of and there were two temporary greens in play due to recent drainage work. All in all the general consensus was it's a nice course layout but in need of some major TLC.

Congratulations to Paul & Claire Baker on the birth of their second child on Friday, a baby boy and potentially a future Wanderers Champion just like his dad.
WW18/3 - Houghton-le-Spring, Saturday 28/4/18
Houghton is the Wanderers second home with 5 members among our ranks and it usually provides us with a high scoring round. We usually play Houghton later in the year when the weather is a bit warmer, to say it was chilly is a bit of an understatement! though at least it was dry and relatively calm.
With a healthy group of 17 Society members playing along with Tom McDonald a returning previous member we were set for a good day's golf. In the past the winner at Houghton usually comes from the ranks of the members and this season was to prove no different though we didn't have the usual high scoring round.

WW18/2 - South Shields, Sunday 15/4/18
I thought it would never happen this season but we finally had some decent weather for a Wanderers gathering, calm and dry with some hazy sunshine if a little cool in the sea breeze. South Shields is always in good condition and this visit was no exception, the greens were especially noteworthy, running true and relatively fast given we are still early in the golfing season.
Though still good, the scoring on the day was slightly down on the previous game at Newbiggin, I think this reflected the fact that South Shields is a tougher course. South Shields saw a very healthy turn out of 23 Members, including the new dad Steve Rudd who appeared to enjoy his first outing with us. Steve took the Longest Drive category along with finishing 3rd overall and carding a Birdie.

Latest News - A couple of celebrations (8/4/18)
As most of you already know our Treasurer John Ford got married a couple of weeks ago so congratulations go to John and his bride Pam. He was intending to play at Newbiggin but while away on honeymoon he managed to pull a muscle in his back "while feeding the fish in Vilamoura harbour" or so he claims!
Our second piece of good news is that Steve Rudd, one of our new members who was also intending to play this weekend has just become a father yesterday (7/4/18) so congratulations go to him also. We will have to wait another weekend to welcome Steve to the Society.
WW18/1 - Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Sunday 8/4/18
Well back to the golf and finally, at the third attempt we have managed to get the 2018 Wanderers season underway. The first two gatherings at Hobson and Newbiggin had to be cancelled and postponed respectively due to bad weather. The course at Newbiggin has been altered recently due to drainage problems but the new layout was still a challenge to anyone's game and, as it turned out a challenge to their navigation skills too!
I did expect our new scoring and handicap system to improve the overall scores but I didn't expect this much change as the scoring on the day was excellent given the wet course conditions and being so early in the season. There was a bit of confusion with the scoring on the new layout as I didn't have enough time to change the stroke indices and par's on the cards. For the majority there were no issues but one hole in particular, the 149 yard, par 3, 15th hole caused problems as quite a few players marked their Stableford score based on the original par of 4. WW18 - Pre-season game, Hobson, Sunday 18/3/18
For this year's pre season game we decided to try the Hobson Golf Club in Burnhopfield, a course we have never visited before. Sadly it looks like we will have to wait a while longer to sample it's delights. On the day the weather decided to play it's joker card giving us a rerun of the Beast from the East meaning most courses in the area were closed. Oh well the long awaited return of the Texas Scramble format will have to wait another year.
