Section 4 - Competition Details
Main Championship
Each Championship round will consist of one 18 hole round of golf. Scoring will be the standard Stableford scoring system. Only your best TEN scores out of the SIXTEEN rounds will count towards the Championship.
Tim Aberdeen Shield
A few of years ago our previous Chairman Brian Sykes suggested, in the interest of friendly competition, the running of a knockout style golf competition. This competition was run separate from the main championship. In honour of our good friend Tim Aberdeen who we sadly lost to cancer in late 2013 we decided to rename our knockout competition. Last season we decided to revise the competition and run it along the lines of the football Champions League as below :-
This year to try and speed things up a bit we intend to revert to the original FA Cup style knockout competition with the top sixteen from last seasons Championship going into the initial phase. Number 1 playing number 16, No 2 playing 15 and so on.
Once the initial phase is completed the remaining eight players will be entered into draw for the quarter final knockout stage. The winners of the quarter finals then cary through to a draw for the semi-final untill we are left with two finalists and ultimately an overall winner.
The competition will use Matchplay format using Stableford points scores. The initial phase handicaps will as of the end of last season. From then on the handicaps will be as at the time of the draw for each round. There will be no WHS adjustment for this competition. Note the Aberdeen Shield handicaps may differ from the usual WW handicaps at the time of playing. Because of this this we would prefer these matches be played OUTSIDE the normal WW Championship rounds to avoid any confusion.
If any match pairing are unable to complete their tie by the specified date we will take into account a previous Championship game and use that score to break the tie. The scores used will be decided by drawing the games to use out of a hat until the tie is resolved.
This competition will be run and administered by Dave Coates & Ian Gunn.
Wanderers Weekend Away (Borders Championship)
The winner will be the player with the highest combined Stableford score over the two matches (not including any win or tie bonus).
Nearest the Pin competition
As before this will be played over all rounds, one par 3 hole per course will be designated as the “Nearest the Pin” hole. Measurements will be taken and recorded at each round. The overall category winner will be the player who wins most rounds.
Measurements are to be taken from the front edge of the hole to the front of the ball, in other words, the shortest distance. In the event of a tie the overall winner will be the tying player who got nearest to the hole over all rounds.
Longest Drive competition
The Longest Drive competition will consist of 16 rounds, one suitable hole per course will be designated as the “Longest Drive” hole. For a shot to count towards the championship the ball must travel a significant distance (at least 150 yards) and finish on the correct fairway (or green). Players must use their “usual” driving club, be it a driver, 3 or 5 wood or even a long iron.
The overall winner will be the player who wins most rounds. In the event of a tie the competition will continue on the last course at the next suitable hole until a winner is found. The choice of holes will be decided by the committee.
Two’s Pot
Each Member will pay 50p at the start of rounds 1 to 15. At the end of the season the pot will be divided on a 1 “Two”, 1 share basis. This competition will be run and administered by Gordon Grant.
Birdie Bowl
In a slight change to previous seasons a "Birdie" will be classed as any three or more point Stableford score carded throughout the season. This will be will be logged and the Member who cards the most "Birdies" will win the trophy.
Round winners pot
Each player (member or guest player) who wishes to enter will pay £1 at the start of every round, the winner on the day takes the pot. This competition will be administered by Dave Coates & Dave Sanders. PLEASE NOTE - Entries and payment for this competition will close 30 minutes BEFORE the first tee time (ie. when the playing order draw is done). Late entries will only be accepted with the agreement of the organisers. If the round winner has not paid into the pot it will go the the second placed player (as long as they have paid and so on).
