2010 Borders Championship

The new scaled down Borders Championship was held over two rounds on one weekend, the first at Moffat and the second, the following day at Brampton. Some of the society members have fond memories of Moffat as we had visited it a few years ago as part of the old Borders week long championship. The course was in good condition but had still to fully recover from the long harsh winter but the welcome in the clubhouse was still up to the high standard we remember. The winner of round 1 was Derek, who was no doubt fortified by his "light" lunchtime tuna salad, with 41 points.

After quite a heavy night's merrymaking Sunday dawned cloudy and overcast with occasional heavy showers putting a bit of a dampner on the prospects for a good days golf but thankfully the clouds blew away and the sun got out. As this was the first visit for any of us to this course Brampton was an unknown quantity and a leveler. One thing is for certain, Google Earth does not do the gradients on this course justice, thank God for golf buggies! At the post match gathering in the clubhouse the universal feeling was that Brampton was one of the best courses we have visited in the eight years our society has been running. The winner of the second and final round was Tim Aberdeen with 43 points.

The Borders Championship itself was very tight with five points covering the top seven players. In third place with 72 points was Derek Griffiths. Second went to John Ford with 73 points, Tim also had 73 points but the tie was resolved by virtue of Tim's round win so the 2010 Borders Champion and recipient of "The Claw" was Tim Aberdeen.

2010 Team Challenge

2010 Chairman's Team

2010 Captain's Team

The 2010 Team Challenge day was held at Castle Eden golf club on Friday 28/5/10 and turned out to be the closest competition yet. On the morning first blood went to the Chairman's team when Neil Hogg and Ian Gunn defeated Tim Aberdeen and Dennis Williams on the last hole. The next match between Rico playing with Ian Hindley versus Eddie Harrison with Tony Arkley finished all square. The match then swung towards the Captains team when Captain Jim Rooks playing with Craig Johnson beat Chairman Derek Griffiths and Paul Baker by one hole. The final match comprising of Paul Marshall and Dave Watt versus Kevin Hall and Phil Cobb finished all square making the overall score after the morning nine hole pairs matches all square at 2 points each.

The afternoon session was equally tight, The Captains team took a two point lead when Dennis beat Ian H. and Eddie beat Ian G. but that lead was immediately cancelled out when Dave and Chairman Derek beat their opponents Phil and Craig. Derek was beaming when he walked off the eighteenth green having been behind for the whole match until drawing level on the seventeenth hole and taking victory on the eighteenth. The next two matches went with one to each side, Captain Jim beat Paul M. and Rico beat Tony.

It was all now down to the final two pairs. Match eight was the Clash of the Titans when the two "professionals" Neil Hogg (7 handicap) and Tim Aberdeen (8 handicap) went head to head, after a hard fought match Neil came out on top winning 3&2. So it all came down to match seven between Paul Baker and Kevin Hall, the DESCO workmates had a Titanic battle with Paul taking an early lead only to be pegged back by Kevin. Paul retook the lead on the thirteenth hole and held it to go Dormie on the seventeenth hole though Kevin never gave up and won the eighteenth to halve the match.

The final result was 51/2 points to the Captains team and 61/2 points to the Chairman's team so the winner of the 2010 Team Challenge cup is Derek Griffiths and his team comprising of Neil, Rico, Paul B., Dave W., Paul M., Ian H., & Ian G. Commiserations to the losing team led by Captain Jim with Tim, Eddie, Tony, Kevin H., Craig, Dennis & Phil. Lets hope for as close a competition next year.

Chairman's team 6 1/2 points - Captains team 5 1/2 points

Congratulations to the winning team led by the 2010 Chairman Derek Griffiths (below).
